Luke 22:24-32 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. (25) Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. (26) But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. (27) For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. (28) You are those who have stood by me in my trials. (29) And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, (30) so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (31) "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. (32) But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.

1. WHY DID SATAN WANT PETER?
1. To destroy his testimony.
2. To try to prove to sinners that Christianity is not a lasting experience.
3. To create a stumbling block.
4. To rob the kingdom of God of precious souls.

2. WHAT DOES SIFT MEAN?
1. “Sift” in this verse means “to be turned upside down, shaken and separated–to be shocked through the agitation of sudden trials.” Sounds a great deal like life.
2. The whole purpose of this sifting is that we would turn from our faith! Jesus used this analogy to say to Peter, “Satan believes you’re nothing but grit and dirt and that when he puts you in the sieve and shakes you, you will fall through to the ground.”
3. This is not unlike what Satan said to God in the book of Job. Job was not exempt, and neither are we. I believe that at different points in our life we could all replace the name of Job or Peter with our name. What does the devil think of us? He thinks that we are nothing and that we are weak. He thinks that when he applies the pressure we will fall through to the ground in defeat and despair.
3. HOW DOES SATAN SIFT MEN?
1. Through sickness.
1. Proverbs 18:14 A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?
2. Through doubt and fear.
3. Through the fear of man,
1. Proverbs 29:25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
4. Through severe temptations.
5. Through the death of a loved one
6. Through loss of reputation
7. Through financial disaster
8. Through loss of employment
9. Through broken relationships
   
4. HOW CAN THE VICTORY BE GAINED?

By an unshakeable faith in the Lord

1. 1 John 5:1-5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. (2) This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. (3) This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, (4) for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (5) Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1. By resisting the devil
1. James 4:7-8 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
2. By seeking things which are of the Lord,
1. Colossians 3:1-3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. (2) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (3) For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
3. By performing Christ’s revealed will.
1. Act 20:27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.
2. Leviticus 20:7 " 'Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.
3. Consecration is the act of taking something common and separating it for sacred use. For us this means devoting and dedicating ourselves the service and worship of God. Consecration does not make you but declares that you are devoted to God and to His divine service.
4. 1 John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
4. By Prayer
1. Eph 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
2. 2 Thessalonians 3:2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.
3. Jas 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Luke 22:59-62 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." (60) Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. (61) The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." (62) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

How many times Peter must have played this over and over in his mind, thinking, “Didn’t Jesus say I would return to Him, be brought back to Him? Didn’t He say I still had a ministry? After what I did, can I really help others? Well, consider this:

1. Peter was the first disciple to reach the tomb when they were told that Jesus had risen.
2. He was with the other disciples when Jesus later appeared in their midst.
3. He was on the beach with the risen Christ when He said, “Peter, feed my sheep.”
4. He was there worshiping when Jesus was translated to glory.
5. He became a mighty preacher and missionary and leader in the early church.
