Physical Healing by Dr. D. N. Jackson

If physical healing is in the atonement of Christ, as the “divine healers” maintain, we would like to know how one could be saved without being healed of physical infirmities.

No one can accept the atonement by faith without being saved from sin, but we have reasonably good evidence that salvation has been obtained by some who never obtamed physical healing. Fannie Crosby and Amy Carmichael are examples of this kind. Today we sing Fannie Crosby’s songs which she gave the world in physical blindness, three thousand or more of her hymns being set to music.

It may be pointed out that Christ, while on earth, healed both body and soul, and that he did not neglect the body of the infirmed when he saved their souls. Grant all this, and then we are not bound to believe that His blessing could not have passed to the soul independent of the body’s ailments.

If Christ’s blessings could not be received into the soul apart from physical healing, where there was ailment, then physical healing has been taken out of the atonement since that time, else physical infirmities now are evidence that those who are thus beset are not saved. We can believe that the Lord still gives physical blessings without making ourselves ridiculous by teaching so-called “divine healing.”

I found this while at Kellar Library at the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary while researching on Dr. Jackson. This was in their Baptist Biographies file on Dr. Jackson. Unfortunately I can not find the source of this but it appear it might be from the American Baptist a paper he edited for decades. For more information about Dr. Jackson you can visit the Wikepeida page on him that I started here.

Zhubert.com Lives on.... Sort of.

One of the saddest things to happen to Greek and Seminary students was the demise of the wonderful sitezubuert.com that later became ReGreek. On march 11th, 2007 it was posted on their site -

It has come to my attention that the MorphGNT team has had to pull their text offline at the request of the German Bible Society, so this site is offline as well. As their database was the heart of the window-dressing we provided here, there's not much to show without it. There are many great Bible study resources out there, and some new ones that are being built. I encourage you in your efforts to make use of those. This site will be powered off for good soon.

It would seem then that we would have heard the last of this fine site that helped many a student speed up their translation work between their five part time jobs they work while trying to stay afloat in school. That part is true. Yet as i was casually surfing links on a friend's blog I saw that he had Greek on his site from zubuert.com as I had several blog revisions ago. Wow. What a great surprise. I followed the link, nabbed up the code and added back to my blog.

This little Greek Html goodie is great fro students, professors and theological snobs alike! So, get the code, add it to you blog and let a little piece of the zubuert.com we loved so much live on!

Shocking Statistics

Shocking Statistics to Consider:
  • 388 Jewish people die every day without a personal relationship with Messiah Jesus
  • 2,718 of God's Chosen People pass away every week without receiving Jesus as their Messiah 11,649 of the sons and daughters of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob leave this world every month without hope and without Jesus
  • 141,741 Jewish people die every year while lost in their sins

Information Source: Southern Baptist Convention providing the information that 7,200 people in the world die every hour with the additional information from Wikipedia that the world Jewish population is 0.227%.

When are we going to do something to stop this tragic reality?

Perhaps a Jewish Evangelism Seminar ...

The Jewish Evangelism Seminar -- “How to Witness to the Jewish People” -- is designed to help take the fear out of Jewish evangelism. “How to Witness” can be presented to a church, small group, or Sunday School class in a seminar format, weekend evangelism retreat or through a one-time church presentation.

If you would like to bring the Jewish Evangelism Seminar to your church or small group, please email info@tzedakahministries.org and they will graciously help you bring this about. Ad for the record, this is not me, but I completely endorse and support thier ministry.

The above infromation was from a post by Tzedakah Ministries entitled Shocking Statistics

Joel 1:1-4 Jehovah is God.

  1. The oldest of Samuel's two sons appointed by him as judges in Beersheba.
  2. A descendant of Reuben.
  3. One of David's famous warriors.
  4. A Levite of the family of Gershom.
  5. The second of the twelve minor prophets. He was the son of Pethuel. His personal history is only known from his book.
  6. He was a contemporary with Amos and Isaiah.
  7. His name means, Yahweh isGod, while this father’s name, Pethuel, means “vision of God”.

Unlike most of the other prophets, Joel does not state the period during which he preached. It is believed that the second of the twelve Minor Prophets, the son of Pethuel, probably prophesied in Judah, in the reign of Uzziah, about B.C. 800. some say earlier some later, but all about this time period. In his youth he may have known Elijah, and he certainly was a contemporary of Elisha. For us as the reader there is no great as the book is largely concerned with just one incident, a severe locust plague that appears to be set in Jerusalem and the surrounding countryside.

Joel was a man of vitality and spiritual maturity. A keen discerner of the times, he delivered God's message to the people of Judah in a vivid and impassioned style, with a precision and originality

The sovereignty of God and the inevitability of divine punishment for covenant unfaithfulness are dominant themes in Joel. So is Yahweh's compassionate forgiveness in response to repentance. The day of the Lord, both judgment and blessing aspects, is also a prominent theme. So we could say that the them of this book is: How God exercises His sovereignty when His people sin.

Joel 1:1The word of the LORD that came to Joel, son of Pethuel.

  1. From this verse there are two things that I think we should notice
    1. The first is that Joel gives a short lineage of himself a reference point. This is commonly seen among the prophets. This helps us connect the dots when it comes to finding out more about him. Hosea did this as did Micah and later Zephaniah.
    2. Second, is that this is God driven, that is the words are not his but the Lords. He is simply the mouthpiece of Yahweh. All the words and all the volume – i.e. power, come from God Almighty.

An Invasion of Locusts

Joel 1:2 Hear this, you elders; give ear, all inhabitants of the land! Has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

  1. The opening words of Joel are a call to receive instruction designed to arouse attentiveness: “Hear this!” Joel had a vital message for the people of Judah. He demands the attention of his fellow citizens because his message comes from God
  2. The Israelites, God’s Chosen people had traditionally held special services for a time of national mourning in response to a variety of misfortunes. The prophet was convinced that the time had come again for the community to meet in Jerusalem to hold such a service of lamentation in the temple.
  3. Notice who is addressed here. The older followers. They are addressed because they have the wisdom and memories that are need to recognize what has taken place.
  4. Joel knows they are a people who are dependant upon the Lord and what comes from the land.
  5. He asks them to look back across their lives and search their memories and see if anything of this magnitude has ever happened. Have you ever seen anything like this in all your years? Do you remember your parent or grandparents talking about anything of this severity taking place?

Joel 1:3 Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.

  1. Since the old men, the elders of the community are not able to remember such a tragedy from the years gone by they will need to tell it to their children, their grand children and even their great-grandchildren about the awful event.
  2. With the this great drama taking place in their lives the Prophet of God instructs them to teach what has happened to each generation. Much like the Shema would be passed down; the events that are taking place must be transferred successfully to each new generation.
  3. Hear the message and pass it down. We say things like “those who don’t study history are often doomed to repeat it in modernity. Let us to learn from these lessons and pass them on too.

4 What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has

  1. The Book of Joel opens with a extremely graphic and powerful description of the devastation caused by swarms of several kinds of locusts, accompanied by a terrible drought. Locusts destroying everything in an unprecedented plague
  2. The King James refers to the different types of locusts them the palmerworm, locust, canker worm, and the caterpillar
  3. The NIV refers to locust swarm, young locust, great locust and other locust. The generalness of this leaves some of the color out of the account.
  4. Even the Message captures this - Joel 1:4 What the chewing locust left, the gobbling locust ate; What the gobbling locust left, the munching locust ate; What the munching locust left, the chomping locust ate. This version may work best for children. It seems as if it word
  5. The fact that there are four kinds of locust listed is significant.
      1. The first school of thought is that they represent the amazing completeness of the devastation. That is they symbolize one swarm of locusts after another has invaded the land, and completely devoured its fruit. The use of several different words, and the division of the locusts into four successive swarms, of which each devours what has been left by its precursor. This seems highly likely.
      2. An additional view of the plague of locusts is that not only is it one of the most dreadful scourges of the East but it is an invasion of hostile legions such as have often ravaged Judea those who understand this see the locusts of Joel as the Chaldeans, Persians, Greeks, or Romans.
      3. The locust may play a dual role in prophecy and represent both ideas.
      4. A third view is that Joel is only speaking poetically about the locust. In Hebrew there are at least nine different names to indicate the different species and/or stages of maturity.
      5. A final theory is that these are judgments much like those found in Jeremiah and Ezekiel
        1. Jeremiah 15:3 "I will send four kinds of destroyers against them," declares the LORD, "the sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.
        2. Ezekiel 14:21 "For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments--sword and famine and wild beasts and plague--to kill its men and their animals!
    1. The locust had robbed the land of life as all the crops have been eaten or ruined. This lead to an economy that was in turmoil, disrupted the country as a whole, threatened the security of the land, and deeply affected all levels of society. No one could escape the intensity of this as God’s abundance had been devoured by the locust and now a barren dust bowl was left after to storm of locust parted.
    2. With these hand full of verses as the opening to the grand theater we can see that Joel will be a interesting study.

Power Up

Some times victories come in the wildest ways. Since we have been in Garland, TX we have had a huge electtric bill. Crazy big. We have tried to lessen in but it seems that nothing really took a bite out of the bill. Not to far into the process my wife noticed that we were getting billed at a commercial rate. We were a bit mifffed to say the least. We argued with them for a while but they would not deal with us because we were not the one's who had set the parsonage's electric bill. We did not have the social securitynumber of the unknown person (turned out this was a former pastor!) who has set up the account. Round and round we went, and they being the Powers that be (pun intended) would not budge. We could never find out who had set up the account and we could never find that "magical social security number!

Months go by and the bill rose like sin being heaped up! There was nothing we could do. Then one day a member, Debbie, was talking to my wife. They were talking about bills and they lady was horrifed that we stuck paying a commercial rate. We were too! The conversation kept going and this lady made it her mission to solve this problem.

It turns out that we have not just being paying a commercial rate, but commerical taxes and a delivery free that residents don't pay. Not only that but the never had a social security number for the Mystery account holder. So we were hunting for something we did not need the whole time.  It was set up by a prior pastor under the Church Tax ID.

So, we have paid in a ton of money that they will not refund.  Years ago when it was all set up "we". as in the Church did not request for them to inspect the site and "we" set it up wrong. So since "we" goofed up to begin with they will not help except to inspect the neighborhood in the next few days and waive the fee that they normally charge. Why the is does not cover all that we have paid in we are so thrilled for the upcoming change. God has brought us a VICTORY!!!!

Freedom Isn’t Free - Gal 5:1 - Raw Notes

Freedom is very important to Americans. Our country was founded on freedom or liberty. Listen to the words of our Pledge: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

  • Patrick Henry, a name once known to every school boy, a prominent figure in the American Revolution, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States is best known for his heroic exclamation: “Give me liberty, or give me death!”
  • We celebrate freedom. We fight valiantly for freedom and utter such phrases as “Don’t tread on me and sing words like, “From every mountain side, Let Freedom ring!
  • It would seem that as such big believers in freedom, that we would never let anyone corner us. That we would never give up or be forced in to something we did not want to do, but that is not the truth. We find ourselves doing things all the time because someone wants us to or we feel guilty or we are afraid of what someone will think. Paul addressed people just like us who suffered with this.

The Apostle Paul explains to a group of believers in Galatia that they need not be slaves. He reminds them that they should not return to old ways and become prisoners of their faith. He explains to them that no one should force them to practice more than the faith that Jesus gave them. And Paul finally reminds them that they are not slaves but free men and women.

These words are good for us here today, and every generation until Christ returns … will you join me in reading Galatians 5:1.

Galatians 5:1. - It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

It is for freedom that we are set free. This sounds a little redundant at first. It would almost seem to break the grade school rule that a word can never be used to define it’s self. Paul found it necessary to tell the Galatians and us the truth that our hearts should know, WE ARE FREE. Christ’s death on the Cross was the emancipation proclamation of our salvation. Lincoln freed the slaves and Jesus freed our souls from the clutches of Hell.

Lincoln’s proclamation and did two things. The first it declared the freedom of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America and second it named ten specific states where it would apply. Jesus’ sacrificially written, blood bought proclamation set us free from Spiritual Bondage, from Sin and Satan and it specially tell us we are Free. But what are we freed from. We are ….

We are free from our old self we are free from who we used to be. We are released from who we once were. You and I have done things that we are ashamed of. That we don’t even like to think about. Things that we would just die if someone found out about, but with Christ’s death, we have been freed from this. He has wiped the slate of our soul clean.

  1. 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
  2. You are who you used to be, you are a new creation. The Old You is dead. It was buried with Jesus. If you have sold or used drugs, when you trusted Christ it was buried in the grave with Him. If you have found lust in your heart or held it in the grasp of your hands, when Jesus became the Ruling King of your life, it was interred with His body. The thoughts of revenge and murder; the wants of pleasure, excess and greed; the lying lips, embezzling hand, wandering eye - all of these were laid to rest with Christ’s glorious body.
  3. Our sins are buried forever and we can not let the dog of Satan dig them up and try to bring the back to us. They are dead and buried. Those sins are no longer remembered by God

We are Free from Condemnation

  1. We are free for the hurtful words of other who remember our past. We can not let those who know you make you a slave again to the old you.
  2. Micah 7:19 - You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
  3. To remain free we can not going diving back into the past bring up feels of past guilt over and over.
  4. A song writer once wrote: I stand before you guilty and unworthy. How can I be forgiven and Holy. And I know I break Your Heart. But you promised I could start all over. And all the things I’ve done. You placed them each and everyone. Into the sea of forgetfulness.
  5. If God has forgotten you past iniquities, then you can be free from the personal guilt, free from the cutting words of family members, free from the guilt, free from the self loathing, free from the condemnation that Lucifer tries to impose upon you.

Finally, we are Free to live

  1. This means we are free from man’s religious rules. We are free from the religious code of holier than thou huddles. We are free to live by the word and not by man’s view of how things should be. We are free to live our faith as we follow the Holy Spirit and not worry if it is Hallel, Kosher. Or you can’t wear make up, or jeans. You can’t bob your hair or dye it or trim your beard.
  2. Romans 6:6-7 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
  3. Christ did not die so that we could worry about picking up a candle stick on Shabbat, or the Sabbath. Or be fretful that God would Strike us dead if we flip the switch on the electric ice cream maker.
  4. Jesus’ death set’s us free from the law and from man’s opinions. Jesus, the Savior of Our Souls, Lord of All, he too found that some would seek to condemn Him and His disciples.
  5. Matthew 12:4-8 He (that being Jesus) entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
  6. Jesus, the same Son of God who said He came not to change one jot or title, one period or crossing of a “T”, found that what was more important that trying to keep a religious checklist was a relationship with the Lord. Their religion, might have keep them looking holy, but they we dead from a lack of a living faith. They had a religion, not a relationship with Jehovah.
  7. As Believers we are to live by the powerful Living Word and not the corrupted comments of those who would have us looking backward in religion instead of forward in faith.

For all of these aspects of Freedom and many more can only be found in a Christ, they are only available to those who love and trust their lives to Christ.

This beautiful freedom that is offered to us is not free. It is not free because it had to be bought. The overwhelming problem for us is that we can not buy it. We don’t have the right currency. We don’t have a life free of sin. This means our freedom has to be paid for by Jesus. Jesus paid for our sins with His life. Because His life was perfect and pure and holy, Jesus as the Spotless Son of God, served as the only and perfect sacrifice for our sinful lives.

We have freedom because of His death. Our liberty had the cost of Christ’s life. Our Salvation is due to His sacrifice, we are no longer condemned because of the Cross. But to enjoy all that this entails you must choose to take Jesus as your Lord. You must put yourself under His authority if you are going to benefit from the Jesus’ death. Real freedom comes in surrender to Christ and His atoning work in the Cross for you and your sin. Real freedom is found at the alter with a confession of Sin. A real independence day is when you find your dependence upon Christ.

Faith - Raw Notes

In 1975 a lady by the name of Peggy Orbke was asked to come in for a second set of tests at the Doctor’s Office. Upon the return of the results, He doctor told her that she had cancer and that she would never see the birth of the grandson. Begrudgingly she scheduled surgery and was going to try to preserve what life she could. She turned to friends for prayer and support.

The morning of the surgery, the doctor had some more tests ran. The results of these showed no cancer. The surgery was scratched and surgeon said it must have been a miracle.

Three years later another group of tests showed signs of cancer. Once again she began to seek out her close friends for prayer and support during this difficult time. The doctors this time were much more grim and told he that she would never see her grandson reach preschool. For a second time Peggy signed up to take the plunge and go under the knife. This time the doctor’s said that she need not to expect a miracle… yet on the morning of the surgery, when the doctor ran one last test… to his surprise the signs of cancer were once again gone.

Some time it seems so hard to keep our faith during hard times. It might even seem impossible. Impossible – Frustrated

In talking about a camel going through the eye of a needled - Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Matthew 17:14-20 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. (15) "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. (16) I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him." (17) "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." (18) Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. (19) Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" (20) He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

A rebuke

  • "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?

A reminder

  • Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" (20) He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
  • Rom 1:12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.
  • Hebrews 11:1-6 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (2) This is what the ancients were commended for. (3) By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (4) By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. (5) By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. (6) And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

What Is Faithfulness?

  • A shepherd once came to the city of Edinburgh from the country. He had his small obedient dog with him. While there, the man died and was buried. That little dog lay upon its master's grave-not for a day, a week, or a month, but for 12 years. Every day at one o'clock a gun was fired in the castle of Edinburgh. When the gun was fired the dog would run to the local baker who gave it food and water. Then back to the grave it would go. This continued till the dog died 12 years later. That was faithfulness!
  • A man threw a goose, which had been run over and crushed by a car, into an oil drum. For seven years the gander, that goose's mate, never went more than ten feet away from that oil drum. That was faithfulness!
  • George Mueller prayed for 52 years for a certain man to come to Christ. A pastor visited an elderly man 21 times before being admitted, but then he befriended the man and led him to Christ. That was faithfulness!
  • A Welsh postman had the British Empire Medal conferred upon him by Queen Elizabeth; he had not missed a day's service in 43 years. Paul Dhrlick, the chemist, performed 605 unsuccessful experiments; the 606th was a success! Thomas Edison made 18,000 experiments before he perfected the arc light. After experiencing 50 failures on another project he said, "I have found 50 ways it cannot be done!" That was faithfulness!
  • During the Korean War a man buried himself in the muck and mud of a pig sty (except for his nose and mouth so he could breathe) for eight days and nights rather than betray his buddies and surrender to the enemy. That was faithfulness!
  • Are you not glad that Jesus was faithful in dying for us and that He now lives and is faithful to care for us? God grant us grace to be faithful!

Hebrews 10:19-25 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, (20) by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, (21) and since we have a great priest over the house of God, (22) let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. (23) Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. (24) And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. (25) Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
